Join Kimberly Bizjak for an evening to explore the paranormal side of Salem's history.  Kimberly is the owner of Paranormal Salem, a researched-based paranormal society and tour company. She also teaches Paranormal Studies at NSCC.  You'll learn the history and theory of ghost hunting, debunking, and equipment.  She'll share her spooky findings in Salem, and maybe find some more during the lecture!

Michele will kick off our speaker series Seven Lectures at Seven Gables this Wednesday in our Visitor’s Center at The House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby St., Salem MA Please reserve your seats at sweber@7gables.org Please note: seating is limited. Seats are $10 pp for members, $15 pp for non-members. Parking is free. Michele will discuss her book When Evil Rules, a non-fiction novel detailing the Cape Cod murder by a trash man, conflicts in the events that lead to a conviction, and how the political climate surrounding this case may have similarities to how the witch trial history may have affected the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Wednesday, April 17th at 7:00 pm - Jim McAllister “Architecture & Preservation in Salem 1900-2000” Salem’s own local historian & journalist will give a lively account of many of the sites of historic significance in Salem over the past century.

Hank will share how she went from a reporter at Rolling Stone Magazine to the US Senate and then to under-cover investigations for NBC to following her dreams

Saturday, September 21st at 2:00 pm Robyn Kanter Robyn Kanter, of Kanter Design Associates, worked under Dan Foley when he relandscaped the garden and has remained true to its vision. She will tell the story of a garden that is one of the oldest on the North Shore, and arguably one of the oldest anywhere that has remained virtually unchanged by time and fashion.

Wednesday, November 20th at 7:00 pm Brunonia Barry Salem’s own NY Times Best-selling author, Baccante award winner & Strnad Fellowship recipient presents her latest novel fresh off the press.

Attention Volunteers

 

The House of the Seven Gables is gearing up for yet another busy October with extended hours for tours and special evening theatrical performances. The Gables is seeking volunteers throughout the month to help with a variety of tasks. Duties include greeters, ticket checkers, door holders, concierges – and many other fun and interesting positions. The Gables sees over thirty thousand visitors in October and volunteers are an integral part of making sure visitors enjoy the best possible experience.   

 

Volunteers are asked to come in for four to five hour shifts. The greatest need is for weekend assistance.  Some shifts begin at noon, while others are primarily in the evenings. The wide variety of people that visit The Gables in October make for an exciting time to volunteer.  Teens are welcome but must be 16 or older.

Theatrical Performances begin every five to ten minutes and last approximately 35 minutes.

 OCTOBER

LEGACY OF THE HANGING JUDGE

In 1692 the Salem Witch Trials wrought havoc on a small New England Community. Relive these events - based on the historic transcripts. This show takes place in the Nathaniel Hawthorne House, where you will be interrogated by magistrate, John Hathorne, Hawthorne's great-great grandfather, who is infamous for his role in the condemnation and deaths of many “witches”. From there, encounter the tormented, the accused and their accusers in this interactive theatrical experience. Beware, you may find yourself being accused of “writing in the devil’s book!”

SPIRITS OF THE GABLES

Guilt! Greed! Revenge! Enter the world of Nathaniel Hawthorne's burdened characters from his classic The House of the Seven Gables, as they haunt the hallways of their eerie mansion. Witness two families entangled in a curse as Matthew Maule condemns Colonel Pyncheon with the very words destined to become his fate. "God will give you blood to drink!" Travel through The Gables at your own risk, for as long as there is a Pyncheon descendant inside, only darkness and death will fill its walls.

LOCAL STUDENTS' ART ON DISPLAY 

 

The Essex National Heritage Area received a 2012  America's Best Idea Grant from the National Park Foundation.  In partnership with The House of the Seven Gables in Salem, MA, a summer program titled "Making the Caribbean Connection" was funded.

 

A group of young students newly arrived from the Dominican Republic met at The House of the Seven Gables to learn, in Spanish, about their heritage and the historical connections between Salem and the Caribbean.

 

Their amazing final art project is now being displayed at the Salem Visitor Center on New Liberty St, across from the Peabody Essex Museum.

 

 Make your own "connection" with our local youths by viewing their display.
