LEGACY OF THE HANGING JUDGE

In 1692 the Salem Witch Trials wrought havoc on a small New England Community. Relive these events - based on the historic transcripts. This show takes place in the Nathaniel Hawthorne House, where you will be interrogated by magistrate, John Hathorne, Hawthorne's great-great grandfather, who is infamous for his role in the condemnation and deaths of many “witches”. From there, encounter the tormented, the accused and their accusers in this interactive theatrical experience. Beware, you may find yourself being accused of “writing in the devil’s book!”

LOCAL STUDENTS' ART ON DISPLAY

The Essex National Heritage Area received a 2012  America's Best Idea Grant from the National Park Foundation.  In partnership with The House of the Seven Gables in Salem, MA, a summer program titled "Making the Caribbean Connection" was funded.

A group of young students newly arrived from the Dominican Republic met at The House of the Seven Gables to learn, in Spanish, about their heritage and the historical connections between Salem and the Caribbean.

Their amazing final art project is now being displayed at the Salem Visitor Center on New Liberty St, across from the Peabody Essex Museum.

Make your own "connection" with our local youths by viewing their display.

New Photos and the Antique Boat Show!

The Director of Photography for 2011's Bachelor and Bachelorette television series (among many, many others) and camera operator for The Voice last year, Andre Martinez III, was here at The House of the Seven Gables to take photographs to add to our archives.

He spent quite a bit of time here photographing the site and also taking interior shots of The House itself. Martinez reported that he has recently relocated to the East Coast from Los Angeles and is currently reconnecting with a New Hampshire television station, WBIN.

Martinez is also currently working on the upcoming season of The X-Factor.

We are excited to have such a seasoned professional create some images for us to use and please stay tuned for some of the images he took!

In local news, the 30th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Festival is slated to take place this weekend, August 25th and 26th at the Brewer Hawthorne Cove Marina in Salem. They are hosting the event, open to the public, which will feature sailboats, power boats, hand-powered crafts and reproductions. In addition to the boats, there will be judging, exhibits, music and a landside crafts market. You will see ship modelers, artists, photographers and much more.

Settlement House garden bursts with life!

We are in the midst of August already and before you know it, school will be back in session and the Settlement House will be welcoming back the students from Salem Prep. Salem Prep Program is part of the Salem Public School system. They offer classes to students who have difficulty learning in traditional classrooms - perhaps they aren't proficient in English, or have learning disabilities. For every two students in any given classroom, there is one teacher, so the students get extra attention and care.

In the spring, a few of the Gables' staff assisted the students from Salem Prep in putting in a garden - primarily potatoes, onions, carrots and squash. Well, the garden has flourished, to say the very least!

Here is the "before" picture taken in May shortly after the garden was planted:

Well after a long, very hot, very humid summer, the garden is bursting with life! Here it is, in all its glory as of August 27th!

The garden on site at The Gables is also in its full summer glory. We hope you'll visit us soon and take advantage of these beautiful summer days we're still enjoying.

The Gables' partnership with Essex National Heritage Commission

Below is the press release sent out by the Essex National Heritage Commission:

Essex National Heritage Commission Selected as a 2012 National Park Foundation America’s Best Idea Grant Recipient

Essex Heritage and the House of Seven Gables Join with Parks Across the Country to Participate In Foundation’s 2012 Program

June 25, 2012 (Salem, MA) – The Essex National Heritage Area has been selected, along with 48 national parks participating in the 2012 America’s Best Idea program sponsored by the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks. Essex Heritage, in partnership with The House of Seven Gables in Salem, MA received a grant which will fund a new project titled “Making the Caribbean Connection” The goal of the project is to engage underserved Latino youth in discovering and telling the untold stories of Salem and the Caribbean.

Inspired by the critically-acclaimed Ken Burns documentary The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, the America’s Best Idea grant program funds park projects designed to connect diverse, under-engaged populations throughout the United States with their national parks in innovative and meaningful ways.

The purpose of the grant is to build stronger connections by engaging local youth in uncovering the untold stories – past and present – between their homeland islands in the Caribbean and the historic sites in Salem which have interacted with the islands for centuries. The program will directly engage 11-15 middle school students in a summer program based at The Gables with visits to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, Peabody Essex Museum and the Salem Public Library. A second program will be held next fall, after school at the Collins Middle School in Salem, MA. Students explore historical themes as well as personal themes of being Latino, cross-cultural relationships and the feeling of belonging in a new country.

“We are proud to provide the much needed support to create unique opportunities for all Americans to personally connect with their national parks,” said Neil Mulholland, President and CEO of the National Park Foundation. “The America’s Best Idea grants are often the catalyst for extraordinary experiences that develop into lifelong relationships with our national parks for the program participants.”“Essex Heritage is very pleased to work with The House of Seven Gables and Salem Maritime to identify stories and themes that most engage and connect the Latino youth with Salem,” said Annie C. Harris, Executive Director, Essex National Heritage Commission. “The program will help us to better connect the Salem Latino community to our National Park and to the National Heritage Area.”

“Through this new partnership, we will work to expand our historic interpretation to strengthen our ties to Salem Maritime and Essex Heritage,” said Anita Blackaby, Executive Director, The House of Seven Gables. “The mission of The Gables has focused on aiding the local underserved population of Salem consisting largely of immigrant families. We currently partner with many community-based organizations to support and engage our Latino youth.”

For a full listing of participating sites, parks and program descriptions, please visit the National Park Foundation website.
The National Park Foundation and Essex Heritage wish to thank L.L. Bean, DISNEY, the Anschutz Foundation, and the Ahmanson Foundation for their generous support of the America’s Best Idea program.

Lecture three of Seven Lectures at Seven Gables

Robin Woodman, Assistant for Harvard Art Museums Archaeological Exploration of the Sardis, Turkey Expedition, will present a lecture entitled Susannah Ingersoll and Her Role in the Business Community on June 20th, 2012 at 7:00pm at The House of the Seven Gables as part of their ongoing lecture series, Seven Lectures at Seven Gables: Strong Women of The Gables.
Woodman’s lecture will examine the life of Susannah Ingersoll, who inherited the Turner/Ingersoll mansion (better known as The House of the Seven Gables). Ingersoll, a first cousin to author Nathaniel Hawthorne, became a successful businesswoman during the male-dominated merchant/mariner era of late eighteenth, early-nineteenth century Salem.

These were extraordinary times for the newly formed United States of America, for the city of Salem, and self-identified “singlewoman,” Susannah Ingersoll, who faced this unprecedented era on her own. Ingersoll profited from, and must have marveled at, mighty merchant ships as they sailed past her window on their way to the Orient and other exotic places during Salem’s Golden Age of Sail.  Although women had not yet won the right to vote, Ingersoll defied many social restrictions during her lifetime and died a very wealthy woman at the age of seventy-two.

During the upcoming lecture at The Gables, Robin Woodman hopes to illuminate the fascinating connections between the events of the merchant/mariner era and Susannah Ingersoll’s extraordinary life.

Ms. Woodman was born and raised in Salem and reports that as a child she was fortunate enough to have benefited from classes (cooking and dancing) through The Gables and is very happy to be able to present this lecture at such an iconic Salem institution as The House of the Seven Gables.

Woodman earned her master’s degree in Museum Studies at Harvard University and has worked as a Special Projects Librarian at Harvard. She also has done work for the Maine Historical Society, as well as the Adams National Historical Park.
